Research and innovation in breast oncologic surgery
Breast Cancer Surgery Outcomes Research Program
WHO WE ARE?
The Breast Cancer Surgery Outcomes Research Program (BCSORP) is an academic research laboratory associated with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) in Boston, Massachusetts.
The BCSORP lab focuses on assessing the effectiveness, quality, and value of specific medical practices and interventions in the surgical management of breast cancer.
The laboratory has trained numerous research fellows, has made many contributions to the scientific literature and has obtained support through grants (e.g., NIH).
MISSION
The BCSORP lab integrates outcomes research and health services research, including institutional and national databases, to critically appraise clinical results and patient-reported outcomes.
We seek to innovate and create clinical decision support tools, practice guidelines, and educational resources based on clinical outcomes, patient-reported outcomes, and healthcare system metrics.
VISION
Our vision is to translate our results into practice and policies by working with clinicians, professional societies, patients, and purchasers of healthcare.
We aim to improve the surgical management and outcomes of breast cancer using a data-driven approach to optimize patient care.

ABOUT US
Patient Reported Outcomes and Survivorship
BCSORP lab highly values patients' perspectives on breast cancer treatment, diagnosis, and recovery. Our goal is to develop treatment approaches that consider patient preferences and are informed by patient-reported outcomes.

Diversity and Disparities
We study socio-economic factors and other variables that lead to gaps in care or may prevent patients from receiving quality breast cancer care. We also investigate strategies for ensuring optimal care for all.

Axillary Management
Our research focuses on best practices for axillary management, including approaches to improve surgical outcomes, decision-making, and reduce morbidity.

Quality and Improvement
Through the science of improvement, we aim to improve the quality of breast cancer care by identifying and analyzing problems, intervening, and measuring the effects of interventions. Our quality improvement mission is to standardize best practices in order to reduce variation, increase reliability, and improve outcomes for patients and healthcare systems.
